HE’S an unlikely ally but Donald Trump is Wallonia’s friend. A billionaire businessman with global assets might be expected to favour free trade which allows corporations to sue governments. But Trump and the Walloons are united in their opposition to the Canada-Europe trade deal that Canada is desperate to save from the Belgian district’s lone opposition.
A more liberalized world trading environment in an age of rising protectionism is ostensibly a good thing. Allowing poorer nations access to rich nations’ markets that they could not afford to penetrate without governments’ blessing makes a great deal of sense in a world of inequality.
